Sounders must improve

Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer wants to see some improvement from his team. He was speaking after the game against Real Salt Lake which Sounders lost 1-0 despite playing at home. He said that he was not satisfied with what he has seen and that he wants to see his players doing more on the pitch.

Goalkeeper Stefan Frei echoed the same and said that the team is currently underperforming. He said that they are creating very little up front and that it is important that the team improve their collective play.

Frei said that it is important that as a team they do not lose confidence. He said that all the players should get down to the training ground and make sure they discuss what went wrong during the match. He said that there were also some positive during the match and that it is important that we highlight those as well.

Brian Schmetzer said that there was no lack of determination in the match against Real Salt Lake and that the players should be proud of that. He said that they will be working hard during the training sessions to make sure that they correct some mistakes that have been recurrent during recent times.

He said that the players should be ready for the training sessions and that they should prepare themselves physically as well as mentally.

He believes that the players know what is expected of them and that they are ready to give their best on the pitch. He said that the players have been really responsive during the last couple of weeks and this can be seen in the way that they have been performing recently.

He said that you cannot let the result of one game make you lose confidence. Brian Schmetzer said that it is important that the players keep going as a team.

Schmid questions schedule organisation

Los Angeles Galaxy battled against Seattle Sounders on October 19 in a game that finished with a 2-2 draw and now both teams will be facing off against each other in the last match of the season which will decide with club is going to be claimed as the winners and the champions of the current season.

The coach of Seattle Sounders, Sigi Schmid has questioned as to why the schedule has been organized in this way as the manager does not completely agree with this logic.

“I still don’t think anybody likes the situation of playing a team twice at the end. It works out with us and LA because we’re not going to meet in the first round of the play-offs, no matter how it turns out.  But it could have also been a scenario where we could have played these two games and then met in the first round of the play-offs and played four weeks in a row’’ Sigi Schmid said.

The final match is scheduled to take place on October 25 and a victory for Seattle Sounders would be huge for them as they have never won a piece of the MLS silverware and by claiming the triumph will also be history breaking for Seattle Sounders as the club has never managed to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League but a victory against Los Angeles Galaxy will make it happen.

Marcelo Sarvas and Baggio Husidic scored the opening goals of the match for Los Angeles Galaxy when facing off with Seattle Sounders in what was their first battle. The final minutes of the match were ticking down and it seemed like Los Angeles Galaxy was going to secure the victory but late goals from Clint Dempsey and Lamar Neagle turned the match into a 2-2 draw with both sides having to settle with 1 point.

The 2nd and last battle of the season will be the most important in the history of Seattle Sounders as they have a genuine chance of lifting a trophy they have never managed to secure in their history. Seattle Sounders came from behind and scored 2 goals in their first battle with Los Angeles Galaxy and this just shows how determined they are on making history in this season even if their schedule has been balanced or not.

Schmid Confident That Seattle Sounders Can Perform

Sigi Schmid has stated that he is extremely confident that Seattle Sounders will be able to avoid a repeat of last season’s collapse towards the end of the campaign. The team currently lead the MLS Western Conference table by healthy five points over second-placed LA Galaxy. One of biggest tests for the team in the coming campaign will come up in the match against Real Salt Lake on September 12. Real Salt Lake have been on a good run of form in recent times, although they seem to have lost it in the last two matches after going through a draw and a defeat.

Schmid saw his team get a 4-2 win over Chivas USA, who was struggling at the bottom of the table. Former Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins was one of the stars of the show after scoring two goals in the match. Midfielder Andy Rose also scored a brace in the match but the shine was taken off because of the two goals conceded. The victory against Chivas USA means that Seattle Sounders have now won three matches on the bounce after having previously looked like going through another poor patch. There were concerns about the form of the team after the defeat against Real Salt Lake and draw with San Jose Earthquakes.

“I thought [Rose] was sharp. I thought he turned, collected the ball, looked forward, he was a guy hitting a lot of our passes into our forwards and putting guys in. The icing on the cake was that he scores a good header and he gets in on the back post as well. I was very pleased with Andy. It’s great to go in with three straight wins because everyone was concerned that we were in a dive or something [after the rough stretch], and I said ‘this isn’t last year. It’s a different year,” said Schmid.

Make-A-Wish Dreams Come True

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is an organization that helps children with serious medical conditions achieve their dreams and the Seattle Sounders played a huge role in their task of making it a dream come true for the 18 year old Xander Bailey who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.

The wish of Xander Bailey was to become a professional soccer player and he lived this experience for a day when he was officially signed by the Seattle Sounders and later even went on playing for a few moments during the club’s match against Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly encounter.

Xander Bailey even took a shot at goal as he received a pass from Clint Dempsey and the young player launched an effort that was secured by the former U.S national team goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

“That’s something I’ll definitely never forget. That was crazy. I never expected they’d be chanting my name.” Bailey told SoundersFC.com

When the 18 year old player left the pitch, he received a standing ovation from the 55,349 fans that were in the stadium with cheers and applauds towards Bailey who lived his wish for a day as he got the chance to live the experience not only inside the pitch but even before it, Bailey was seen in the locker room of the club as he was changing into the kit of Seattle Sounders along with all of his teammates and even when the friendly match against against Tottenham Hotspur was over, he went on signing the jerseys of fans around the stadium.

The match was a part of the pre-season schedule between both clubs, Tottenham and Seattle Sounders as each team is preparing themselves for the upcoming campaign which is edging nearer and nearer. The friendly encounter concluded in a 3-3 draw as plenty of goals were scored but neither side could claim the victory.

IMPRESSIVE SEASON

Seattle Sounders so far are enjoying an impressive season as they are at the top of their league but received a huge blow after locking horns with New England Revolution a few weeks ago.

Revolution came out on top with a resounding 5-0 victory. Goals from Bunbury, Fagundez, Mullins and Marshall were more than enough for their side to cruise past Seattle Sounders as they played at the Gillette Stadium.

The match was played on May 11th but the impact and echo which resulted in such a devastating outcome can still be felt not only by the head coach of the team, Sigi Schmid but the supporters of the club.

“It was just one of those days, you know. We know we’re going to lose some games this year, but I thought we threw too many people forward, left ourselves exposed for the counter. I thought they did a good job of countering today. They executed well when they got forward, and it’s just a game that we got to forget about.”

“We had possession of the ball. We were the ones holding the ball, knocking the ball around, so it wasn’t a situation where our legs were so heavy that we couldn’t play soccer. We played soccer, but I think maybe psychologically, maybe we weren’t as alert as we needed to be in certain occasions, you know, around the box and maybe defensively as well. Even defensively, our positional defense was not good. We will bounce back. That’s all. There’s no other option.” Schmid said after the conclusion of the match.

Schmid wants the team to focus on the league as they still are located at the top but it will be particularly more difficult for them as Clint Dempsey, DeAndre Yedlin and Brad Evans are some of the more influential players for the team but they have already been named in Jurgen Klinsmann provisional list of players for the upcoming international friendly matches of USA.

Dempsey Expected To Play In U.S

After the match against the champions Chelsea this Saturday, Sounder Dempsey’s loan with English Premier League’s Fulham is ending. Nevertheless, he still has time returning back home to Sounders with another stop to go.

Jurgen Klinsmann, coach of the U. S National team has asked Dempsey to participate for a friendly match versus Ukraine on Wednesday. This game will be hosted in Cyprus courtesy the political condition of Ukraine. In fact, Sounders will be the sole MLS team to be affected before the opening weekend since just 2 of the players were picked for Klinsmann’s twenty four man list consisting of European players. Besides him, Michael Bradley was also called up for the match.

It is expected that Clint Dempsey will be available again to the Seattle Sounders during their opening match versus Sporting Kansas City on 8th March, but most likely he is going to be off the bench. Sounder’s coach Sigi Schmid said that Clint’s role in the team will be affected by how he plays in the upcoming two matches. Schmid added saying that Dempsy is expected to be in the U.S this Thursday; nevertheless it’s an entire day of flying to get back.

He insisted that they have to wait and watch how Dempsy feels as one thing that they don’t want is to overburden him or injure him as they are quite a number of important games ahead.

It was announced this Thursday by the Sounders that start up time for their friendly match versus English Premier League’s Tottenham on 19th July will be at 1 in the afternoon. ESPN2 will be broadcasting the match live. The tickets for the match will be available for purchasing since 24th of March; however can be purchased before as well as 6 game package being available in the market from 8th march.

HOME GROWN STARS

Seattle Sounders has announced the signings of a few homegrown players such as Sean Okoli of Federal Way and Asron Kovar of Seattle.

“Being able to add two young and talented players is a good thing. It’s also very important that Sounders Academy kids can see a pathway onto the first team.” The head coach Sigi Schmid said during a news release.

The MLS side also managed to re-sign the veteran goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann as the shot-stopper will be making his return to the club where he has already spent 2 season. Hahnemann has made 9 appearances for the USA national team and the sporting director of the Seattle Sounders Chris Henderson spoke about what it is having Hahnemann back into the club and the team.

“We are looking forward to having Marcus back in a Sounders FC uniform,” said Sounders FC Chris Henderson in a statement. “He will continue to add veteran leadership and has proven to be solid between the posts. Marcus has had a fantastic career for club and country and we are proud he will be staying with his hometown team.”

Sean Okoli and Aaron Kovar join De Andre Yedlin as the franchise’s only signings who came up through the youth academy system. Okoli has scored 24 goals and provided 9 assists during 3 seasons at Wake Forest while Kovar has also received a number of accolades and awards when he stayed at Stanford for 2 seasons.

Both players said just how excited they were on joining the club and being part of it.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I can’t wait to play at CenturyLink in front of all of the fans. I am excited to help the team win games, score goals and really get my career started.” Okoli said.

“I feel honored to be part of this club. I’ve been a fan since I was 10 years old going to USL games with my dad. It’s obviously a difficult decision, but this has been my dream for as long as I can remember and I’ve worked really hard to get here. I’m excited to be part of my hometown club, to meet all my teammates and get ready for the preseason.” Kovar’s statement during a press conference.
