LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders on December 1

LA Galaxy will be taking on Seattle Sounders on 1 December. This match will witness Landon Donovan taking to the field for one last time. The former US international announced his retirement from the game a few months ago.

This would be his last appearance, but it appears that Donovan does not have any regrets about leaving the game. Regarded as one of the greatest American players of all-time, Donovan has achieved numerous aspects that many American footballer can aspire. However, he has been struggling with motivation since the 2010 World Cup.

Donovan has fell out with current US coach Jurgen Klinsmann, although it appears that both have made up their differences in the last few weeks. The 32-year-old has battled depression and tiredness over the last few years.

Clearly, he has lost the motivation for the game. In one of his final interviews as a player, Donovan says that the sport has moved to a position whereby players cannot think about anything other than games, keeping themselves at a peak condition, and getting results. He says that some athletes may not be programmed to do this on a consistent basis.

The first signs of decline for Donovan appeared after he came back from the World Cup in 2010. He had been playing non-stop football for two years prior to the tournament.

“The way we see athletes — coaches see us this way, fans see us this way, the media sees us this way, owners see us this way — they want us to live, breathe, eat and die the sport. Every game they want you to go out and do everything you can to make the fans feel good, make the coach feel successful, make the owners successful. I think some athletes are wired that way,” said Donovan. He appeared in 157 international matches for the US.

SEATTLE BEAT GALAXY

Seattle Sounders has defeated Los Angeles Galaxy in an MLS reserve league game by a close margin of 3-2. Both the teams fought very hard and it was a thrilling encounter. But, the Sounders held their nerves during the final moments of the game and won the match. Steve Zakuani scored twice for Sounders and played a major role in the team’s victory. The new signing of the Sounders, Mario Martinez, also made his debut for the club by playing in this match. He played in the match for 67 minutes and looked in good touch. Martinez has been in fine form recently. He performed brilliantly for Honduras in the London Olympics. He played well against Galaxy and created some opportunities.

The Galaxy team started the match well and took the lead in the 35th minute of the match with the goal of Jose Villarreal. The sounders didn’t manage to score the leveller in the first half and at the end of the first half; the scorecard was saying 1-0. The Sounders made a comeback when Zakuani scored his first goal in the match in the 72nd minute. This was the first goal scored by Zakuani in the last 16 months. However, Galaxy got ahead again just a few minutes later when Michael Stephens beat Josh Ford, the goalkeeper of Sounders, with an amazing shot. It seemed that Galaxy might run away with the game. But, it was Zakuani again who brought his team back into the match by scoring his second goal in the 84th minute. The match was going towards a draw, but, Sammy Ochoa netted in the 90th minute of the match and secured his team’s victory.

After the match, Zakuani said that it was nice to score a goal after such a long time, but, had he played the whole match, he would have been happier. Zakuani came to play as substitute in the second half of the match. Zakuani also praised Ochoa and said that he was the real hero of the team’s victory.
